The Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

The system of cannabinoid receptors throughout your body is called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). There are two main types of cannabinoid receptors called CB1 and CB2. They act by releasing specific protein molecules from the ends of your nerves similar to the way your nervous system functions (from your synapses) to signal your immune system. Think of your ECS as a hidden nervous system within you which acts as a signaling system to your immune system to boost the health of the organs and tissues near it.

Your ECS is made up of tens of thousands of these hidden receptor sites within the multiple organs that are essential for your health.[1] These include your brain, heart, Lungs, GI tract, muscles, bones, Immune system, endocrine system, excretory system, reproductive system, and your skin. Essentially, they are everywhere within your body that needs to function properly for your best health.

This naturally occurring system has developed over the eons of years and is an integral part of nearly all bodily processes. It has been said to be “one of the most important physiologic systems involved in establishing and maintaining human health.”[2] The system is literally a bridge between your body and mind. It sends messages between your brain and your immune system to signal the healing process to occur when illness or injury occurs. This ECS is thus an immunomodulatory system, and compounds that stimulate the system could be used in the treatment of inflammatory disease.[3]

The ECS modulates your immune system

The root cause of degenerative diseases is inflammation. Although inflammation can help healing, too much inflammation can cause destruction of your tissues within the many organs within you. These organs and systems are the same ones listed above that contain your hidden ECS signaling system. Thus, if you could control this system better, you could potentially give yourself better health.

CBD thus rebalances your system. Through a very complex system, (4) it helps make sure your immune response is more beneficial to your and not destructive. We call these actions immunomodulation, for they modulate the response of your immune system to make it more efficient for you, and less destructive to your tissues. It sort of provides maintenance of your cells and organs to keep them functioning properly. [5]

Think of this like you would do maintenance on a car. When tuned up and properly maintenance is provided to your car, it runs smoothly and works like a dream. In addition, the onboard computer sends signals to ensure your car runs smoothly over time. Similarly, your natural cannabinoids and CBD activate receptor sites to keep normal cells healthy and running smoothly. And there is a plethora of research that suggest just this.

CB1 and CB2, THC and CBD Oil

CB1 receptors are located primarily within the brain but also are scattered outside the brain. They can modulate activity of the brain, which we can see. CB2 receptors are associated with your immune system all over your body, including your brain.  They control your immune system which we cannot see. But the hidden agenda of this control can be beneficial to your health.

The ECS acts through your nerve endings in a retrograde fashion within the ECS. Released from the post-synaptic ends of your nerves, they control the pre-synaptic secretion of neurotransmitters.[6] Think of them acting like “traffic cops” to control the release of neurotransmitters with different expression depending on where the nerves are: in the CNS vs the periphery (outside the CNS).

When you hear cannabis, you automatically think of marijuana, which comes from the plant cannabis sativa. This plant contains two main cannabinoids: THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). THC acts primarily on the CB1 receptors in the brain and can give you the “high” people associate with it. CBD does not give you a high but acts on the CB2 receptors in the periphery to modulate the immune functions.[7]  CBD has also been called “medical marijuana”. It has many uses for medical conditions and produces no “high”.

By modulating your immune system, enhancing the CB2 receptor activity, such as with CBD, has the potential to tune your body and give it better maintenance to fight of degenerative disease caused by inflammation gone wild.

Your Body and Wear and Tear of “Aging”

As you age, your body is submitted to a plethora of conditions that cause wear and tear degradation of the tissues of your body. You experience stresses, such as worries about money, the economy, work, marital, and family stresses. This process can lead to many degenerative diseases of aging, including cancer. A review article in The Lancet recently stated that “chronic stress response and depression probably impairs the immune response and contributes to the development and progression of some types of cancer.”[8]

Living every day in our environment exposes you to multiple factors that can stress your body and create inflammation. In some people, this inflammation is excessive and needs to be controlled. Exposure to air pollution alone has been shown to increase hospitalization for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.[9]

We live in a society that emphasizes eating too many foods that are “bad” for you and not emphasizing healthy food regimens and exercising properly. We tend to eat too many carbs and not enough good fats. Many studies have demonstrated that low carb diets, such as ketogenic diets, have been shown to decrease cancer risk and enhance cancer therapies to help treat cancers.[10],[11] In fact, cancers seem to love carbs for their fuel, but they can’t utilize fats well.[12]

We all want to live longer and age well, but we don’t want to suffer from age related diseases such as cancers, heart disease, etc. Fortunately, you can embrace actions and products that can potentially help prevent and/or treat these degenerative conditions. And one product is CBD oil.

Cannabinoid receptors regulate almost every part and organ system of your body. They modulate the immune response to help decrease your risk of developing degenerative process occurring as you age, keeping your organs healthy. These include your brain, heart, bones, joints, GI tract, liver, skin, and reproductive tract. They help with the stress response, pain response, memory and sleep. They also help decrease pain of arthritis and other causes.[13] Thus it is important to learn about the endocannabinoid system and how CBD oil can help you.

Cancer prevention and CBD

Many studies have demonstrated a reduced risk of developing cancers through the activation of the Endocannabinoid system using CBD oil. Moreover, CBD appears to target only the cancer cells leaving healthy cells in the body unharmed, which is different than many other treatments for cancer. Some of the cancers that may benefit from CBD include:

  • Brain cancer: Multiple separate peer-reviewed studies[14] have proven the effectiveness of CBD in slowing and/or shrinking brain tumors. CBD appears to have significant antitumor activity.[15]
  • Breast cancer: Activating the ECS system can destroy breast cancer cells and slow down, or even stop some of the most aggressive cells from spreading.[16], [17]
  • Lung Cancer: studies have demonstrated a positive effect of CBD in killing lung cancer cells, in inhibiting cell invasion, and in preventing spread of cancer cells. These effects may sometimes be “a profound inhibition of … cell invasion.”[18] , [19]
  • Prostate cancer: CBD appears to be a potent inhibitor of prostate cancer viability.[20]
  • Colon Cancer, Lymphoma, Leukemia, thyroid cancers: CBD has been shown to be beneficial in the proliferation of many other cancer cells.[21]

This CBD oil almost seems like a miracle oil for fending off cancer. It has even been stated that this “miracle oil” appears to rebalance your hidden nervous system that results in killing cancer cells in many ways through many pathways of a more balanced immune system.[22]

At any one time in your life, millions of your tissue and organ cells are reproducing, regenerating and renewing your body with new cells to function at its best capacity. The old cells die off (a process called apoptosis), and the new cells replace the old. Unfortunately, as one of these cells reproduce its DNA could mutate, which could result the start of a cancer if that cell line continues to reproduce. [23]

In other words, CBD may be a new innovative method of decreasing cancer cells from growing and reproducing (i.e. cell proliferation is hampered), which would result in smaller tumors and fewer cancer cells.

If allowed to continue unregulated, this cell line is considered a cancer cell and it can continue to consume you, as we have seen in many cancer patients. By “guiding” your immune system through your hidden endocannabinoid system, your body can regulate these cancer cells better, and even kill them when identified early.

CBD kills cancer cells through several pathways.

Inducing Apoptosis (cancer cell suicide) – Stimulates your own immune system inhibit multiple enzyme systems within the cells that result in the cells not functioning well and dying from within, also called apoptosis. Thus, CBD makes the cancer cells “kill themselves”, and it does this while leaving your normal cells intact who are not affected in such a manner by CBD but protected. [24], [25], [26]

Inhibit angiogenesis- In order to survive, the new cancer cells need an adequate blood flow. Thus, most cancers have the capability to induce the formation of new blood vessels around it. This process of angiogenesis keeps the cancer cells growing, living, and able to spread. CBD appears to be able to reduce this angiogenesis action of these cells; essentially “starving” the cancer cells which can lead to apoptosis (cell death) of the cancer cells.

Hinder proliferation of cancer cells – CBD may help prevent the spread of cancer into the body. This is called proliferation and is analogous to what you may call metastasis of the cancer. It appears to do this through multiple mechanisms. It simulates such as metalloproteinases, and the production of certain proteins that control RNA expression, which inhibit this cell proliferation. [27] CBD also destroys the cells by increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) pathway.[28] These and other effects can lead to a “cannabidiol-elicited decrease in tumor cell invasiveness”.

Thus, many studies have been published that all come to the same conclusion: that use of CBD gives us another novel therapeutic option to help prevent or potentially treat cancers and prevent their invasion.[29]

CBD and Brain health (Neuroprotection)

CBD oil has been demonstrated to protect your brain from many degenerative diseases that can occur as you age, including Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and possibly Parkinson’s disease.[30]  It is thought that this protection is duet to CBD’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. According to the authors of this articles, it also “modulates a large number of brain biological targets involved in the development and maintenance of neurodegenerative diseases.”

Another possible role of CBD in neuroprotection appears to be repair of injured tissues. There are more endocannabinoid receptors on nerves endings after an injury than prior to the injury, suggesting the formation of these is for repair of the nerve/brain tissue. [31]

An analysis of brains from memory challenged individuals does reveal the presence of more cannabinoid receptors. It is thought that the CB2 receptor signaling is activated during such injury and reduces the neuronal degeneration.[32] Thus, even though small injuries may occur to your brain as you live and get older, your endocannabinoid system activates to repair these. The result is neuroprotection for your brain.

Studies have shown that the endocannabinoid system plays significant roles in many biological brain processes, including formation of new neurons (neurogenesis), regeneration and repair of the end terminals of nerves (synapses), emotional regulation and stress responsiveness.[33]

As you age, you see a decline in neural function that may involve insults such as protein formation abnormalities, inflammation of nerve/brain cells, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. All these appear to be modulated by the endocannabinoid system to prevent dysfunction of the neural cells, thus protecting them from these potential damages.[34]

The most important aspect of the neuroprotection from the CB2 endocannabinoid system is a reduction of the inflammatory process.[35] For instance, in Alzheimer’s disease one sees an increase in deposition of Beta amyloid and inflammatory tangles which is thought to cause the poor brain function in AD. CB2 receptors appear to modulate these inflammatory changes through multiple pathways, thus repairing the nerves before AD can develop, and producing neuroprotection for this disease of aging.[36]

CBD and Heart Health (Cardiovascular protection)

There is more and more evidence being published that CBD oil is beneficial and protective to the cardiovascular system. [37] First, it causes direct relaxation of the arteries (vasorelaxation) which decreases vascular damage from this problem as is seen in hypertensive patients. It also protects the arteries from vascular damage caused by high glucose environments as seen in diabetics. Third, it protects against ischemia damage as is seen in myocardial infarcts.

All these effects are mediated by CBD’s modulation of the inflammatory response. The result is an increase in blood flow, less damage to the heart or brain tissue from heart attacks or stroke. In addition, anxiety and stress are reduced via the CB2 receptor system. All of these effects suggest that CBD oil can help protect your heart and your blood vessels from damages that can occur as you age.

CBD and Gut Health (GI protection)

Unregulated immune response in the gut can lead to inflammatory conditions that can ruin your health. The gut contains thousands of neurons and cannabinoid receptors to modify them. Cells similar to those in the brain (microglia) can produce inflammatory compounds (cytokines) that help fight off or neutralize foreign substances that we ingest. However, excess activity of these can overpower the gut and cause inflammatory conditions such as leaky gut syndrome, irritable bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, etc.

CBD is able to regulate the inflammatory substance’s production reducing the development of these chronic diseases.[38]

CBD and Bone Health

Your bones contain a high concentration of CB receptors. The activation of these cannabinol receptors, particularly CBD2 receptors, stimulates bone formation (increase in osteoblastic activity) and suppresses bone resorption (decrease in osteoclastic activity). [39] The result is stronger bones and less chance that you will develop dissolution of your bones as you grow older, otherwise called osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a skeletal condition you see mostly in people who are older. There are many ways to help prevent this including ingesting adequate calcium and magnesium, exercising (weight-bearing type), hormones and others. This degenerative disease results in the formation of skeletal deformities like hump back, and can lead to extremity fractures, such as hip fractures that can lead to death. Using CBD oil may be another modality available to you to prevent such problems from occurring.

Inflammation is the common cause

As we age, there are a multitude of environmental factors that affect our health in many ways, including inducing problems within our cardiovascular system. These not only increase our risk of developing cardiovascular and respiratory disease, but of many other degenerative diseases including cancers. All these occur because of a common etiology: inflammation that occurs naturally from these environmental stresses and just living every day. It is the “Secret Killer” within our society.

The endocannabinoid system supplemented with CBD oil may be able to prevent or treat many of these inflammatory conditions. Your body’s natural immune system is there to protect you from micro invaders or damaging elements that could attack your body and damage your DNA or other vital structures. Protecting these is important, and that is what your immune system does.

However, it must be regulated properly. Over response or dysregulation of your immune system Can result in damage. Think of your immune system as your own personal army that attacks invaders that could cause damage. Your army fights them off, but there’s always collateral damage during a war, and that is what causes the degenerative problems such as arthritis and can also cause hardening of the arteries and cancers. If we can decrease this damage, i.e. decrease inflammation, you’re less likely to develop these problems.

CBD affects the coding of your cell’s genes (DNA) to produce certain proteins that can then regulate your immune system cells and functions. Specifically, CBD binds to a receptor (PPARλ) which modulate the expression of your cell’s genes resulting in coding and production of immunosuppressant proteins.[40] It tells your immune system to clean up after the war (like sending ambulances in) as opposed to continuing the war and secondary damage. It then repairs the body and prevents further damage.[41], [42]

Another proposed mechanism of CBD’s effect on the immune system is that λ receptors activate the expression of genes that are mainly immunosuppressive. This has a secondary effect to decrease expression of proinflammatory genes.

Thus, CBD increases the good and decreases the bad inflammatory genes.[43] CBD also increases the amount of antioxidants produced from your body, so they can then prevent damage from ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) which are toxic byproducts of metabolism that can also increase inflammation if left to their own actions. This is partly due to the gene expressions stimulated by CBD, but also due to intrinsic anti-oxidant properties of CBD, similar to vitamins C and E.

CBD and Anxiety

CBD oil may be useful for anxiety disorders. A small double-blind study conducted in Brazil evaluated the effects of CBD oil on patients’ anxiety and confirmed their results with the use of functional brain scans. They confirmed the anxiety relieving benefits of CBD oil.[44]


The endocannabinoid system regulates almost every organ system in your body. CBD oil activates this system through the CBD2 receptors which primarily modulate the immune system. Since the root cause of age-related degenerative diseases is a dysfunction of this immune system resulting in chronic inflammation, modulating your immune system to function is vitally important for anti-aging.

Thus, prevention for diseases and improvement in health for multiple organs is a key role for CBD oil. It may be protective for your brain, heart, gastrointestinal tract, skin, and other organ systems. Much research is demonstrating its ability to help you live longer and better.
