America still tops the list when it comes to plastic surgery. However, according to a recent survey carried out, it was discovered that South Korea is not so far behind as it has the highest number of procedures in terms of population percentage with 1 out of 77 people having undergone cosmetic surgery.

According to a 2011 research by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS), around 15 million people have had cosmetic surgical procedures done on them. In Seoul, South Korea, it was discovered that 20% of women between 19-49 years have had cosmetic procedures within the last year.

This recent boom in the cosmetic industry in South Korea is believed to have been influenced by the music industry with most patients going for celebrity look-alike make-overs. One of the most popular procedures is the double-eyelid surgery which basically entails removal of excess skin so as to make the eyes appear larger and by doing so, create a more ‘western’ appearance. Nose jobs are also quite popular.

The plastic surgery craze has even extended to celebrities with the global hit-maker PSY of the ”Gangnam Style” fame being asked by his record label to get a cosmetic makeover. Kim Yu-Mi, Miss Korea 2012 admitted to undergoing plastic surgery after photos of her appearing completely different leaked onto internet. On being asked by Korean media about the pictures, she replied “I never said I was born beautiful”

With South Korea topping the tables in terms of the percentage of the population that has undergone cosmetic surgery, the US came first based on the sheer number of plastic surgeries performed in the country. Research shows that 1,904,146 procedures were carried out in 2011 within the US the most popular being tummy tucks, eyelid surgery, Lipoplasty procedures and breast augmentation. Breast augmentation and Lipoplasty topped the list with 284,351 and 223,466 procedures respectively.

In terms of non-invasive cosmetic surgery procedures, there were a total of 3,105,246 procedures done with laser hair removal, Botox, IPL laser treatment and Microdermabrasion being the most popular. In this section, Botox led the pack with a total of 815,150 procedures.

The survey also showed that some types of cosmetic surgery procedures were popular in specific areas of the world. For instance, Brazil best known for its beach culture had the largest number of bottom implants, male breast reduction and vaginal rejuvenation: the firming up of tissue around the vagina to create a more youthful look.

The survey also showed that Rhinoplasty, better known as a nose job, was very popular in Asian countries with Japan, China and South Korea emerging as the top five nations. The US, Brazil, Mexico, Italy and China were ranked as the top four countries for breast implants in the order in which they are listed.

In terms of tummy tucks and eye lifts, the US and Brazil came in first and second respectively.

It was also discovered that a large number of obese adults were resorting to cosmetic surgery as a way of getting rid of the excess weight. Lipoplasty: -the use of high frequency sound which liquefies fat beneath the skin after which it’s sucked out. – emerged second to the top invasive procedure in the world with 1,268,387 procedures. Breast enlargement came in first with 1,295,251. Eyelid surgery was third with 703,610 procedures followed by tummy tucks with 553,399 procedures. Rhinoplasty closed the top-five list with 478,023 procedures.

Some of the most unlikely cosmetic surgical procedures also emerged in the top 20 list, this included buttock implants with 75,591 procedures at number 13. Thigh lifts with 47,000 procedures and chin implants with just under 60,000 procedures also featured prominently on the list.
