A recent article has confirmed the benefits of using PRP (platelet rich plasma) together with CO2 resurfacing (SmartXide Dot laser).[1] We have seen this beneficial effect in our practice at TrueMD, and recommend patients to have PRP added to their facial rejuvenation package.

The biggest concern most patients have regarding the CO2 facial resurfacing procedure is the 7-10 day downtime that they must endure. They look very “scary” at first, are very swollen and the superficial layer of skin that has been lasered will slough off resulting in peeling. Fortunately, after a few days, the result is pretty rejuvenated skin for which patients are very pleased and happy. The article confirms that combining CO2 laser ablation with PRP “can aid patients in hastening their return to their normal routine”.

The authors of the paper state “PRP can objectively reduce erythema and edema following carbon dioxide fractional laser treatment. Most importantly, patients themselves have noticed a reduction in the common post treatment effects: erythema, edema, pruritus, and discomfort.”

In other words, they showed a marked improvement in multiple discomforts that accompany this resurfacing procedure. These include improvements in erythema (redness), edema (swelling), pruritus (itching) and the general discomfort that can accompany the procedure. This in turn helps recovery for the patient more tolerable.

In addition to improvement in healing, PRP can also be used to improve blood supply and increase volume within the face when combined with fat grafting or filler technology. The appearance of facial aging is partially caused by lack of volume, particularly in the cheek area of the face. This produces a sunken appearance below the eyes. Combining these two procedures, volume enhancement and CO2 Laser ablation, results in a miraculous transformation of facial rejuvenation. In other words, most people lose 5 to 10 years of aged appearance with the procedure.

All patients love the results of the CO2 laser resurfacing procedure. Check out this example of an 86 year old female who had the CO2 laser combined with fat transfer to her face plus PRP and you can see the wonderful transformation that can be achieved with these modalities.
