Kybella is an FDA approved injectable solution that has been proven to dissolve small areas of fat and is approved for injections into the submental fat. Submental fat is the fat that tends to accumulate under your chin and can ruin one’s chin profile. Once the fat is dissolved, most of the time the skin will retract and the chin profile improves.
How are the treatments performed?
Each treatment is performed in our office with just a local anesthetic. Once the chin is numb, the area of concern is mapped out and injections are placed just below the skin every cm. The procedure takes only around 20-30 minutes to perform. You go back to normal activities immediately.
How often are the treatments done?
For most people, two to four treatments to the chin may be adequate for adequate reduction of the fat. However, some people require up to 6 treatments before they see adequate results. Once your chin profile has improved, you may not need to be treated with Kybella again.
How successful are the treatments?
Up to 79% of patients treated with Kybella reported satisfaction with the appearance of their face and chin. After treatment, patients reported improvement in self-perception, including feeling happier and younger, based on their chin profile. They also felt less embarrasses, less self-conscious, less overweight, and were less bothered by submental fullness.
How do I know I’m a candidate?
Kybella may be right for you if:
- You’re bothered by submental fullness
- Surgery is not an option for you
- You feel the condition makes you look older or heavier than you actually are
- You eat well and exercise, but the submental fullness does not go away.
Is there downtime?
For most patients, there is minimal to now downtime. You can go back to normal activities immediately in most cases. However, you will have significant swelling of the tissue for several days and this needs to be kept in mind regarding going out in public.
What are the side effects of the treatments?
The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area. The more treatments you get, the less are the side effects. Ice/cold packs may help diminish some of these side effects. Most people just need Tylenol or Advil for pain post-op.
A rare more serious side effect is nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness. Even this side effect usually lessens or even goes away over the next few months.
How much do the treatments cost?
Costs vary depending on the amount of Kybella needed. Each vial of Kybella is $700. Each treatment may need one to three vials, depending on the amount of fat and surface area that needs to be treated. As mentioned, several treatments may be necessary for adequate results. Only a consultation visit will tell you exactly how much it would cost for your situation.
